UNBOUND (2020)

UNBOUND is a performative sculpture, live performance, and short film creating space for processing and healing for the femme psyche.

The sculpture UNBOUND: The Glass Breaks, is an audio-embedded pool of rainwater, glass, inspired 부적들 (Korean talismans), and meditations from 6 different Korean diaspora femme artists. The Glass Breaks takes the form of a reflecting pool, the audio component radiating from below the water grave. The voices hidden beneath the grave speak through the water. Yoo invites viewers to take part collectively, in transforming traumas past and present.

During its exhibition at LA Artcore's Least Visible Structuresthe sculpture was activated by a performance where the artist moved the cement pool outside, collecting rain teardrops from the sky, a blessing from the spirits. The water sets in motion the disintegration of the talismans over time.

The performance and documentation of the sculpture were then combined with footage from Korea, culminating in the film UNBOUND.

A very special thank you to Pranay Reddy and LA Artcore for allowing me to meditate barefoot in the rain and to Kwonyin, Saewon Oh, Yunuen Rhi, Jeong Stransky, and Kayla Tange, my Han sisters, for so willingly performing, meditating, and recording sound reflecting on their own sexual trauma for this project. Thank you for your vulnerability and strength. I learn from you all every single day.

We all die and are reborn every waking moment - a constant cycle of unbinding and rebirth.
