시간 | Time | Poem 간 | 시 Liver | Poem Liver (2022-2023) is a continuously looped 5 channel video piece. The videos range from 6 minutes to 40 minutes where my body performs for the axis Q-19 thermal camera. These are uncut, unedited performances where the documentation shows the performances of my body losing, gaining heat - movement, dance, cold & hot water, - in relation to the thermal camera in real time.
If my film lost | born in translation (2022-2023) was edited to showcase narrative, 시간 | Time | Poem 간 | 시 Liver | Poem Liver (2022-2023) was made specifically to be in tension with the film. lost | born in translation unravels migrational time, silenced time, ancient matriarchal time, through the telling of multiple stories of ancestral trauma and healing. The main film is contained at 25 minutes but 시간 | Time | Poem 간 | 시 Liver | Poem Liver (2022-2023) was made to showcase how much patience is required for said ancestral healing.
The videos are slow, almost painstakingly slow and to the naked eye, at some moments, no change is visible. However if a viewer takes time to look at the other art in the show and come back to my 5 channel film, the changes of body heat are traceable.
The title 시간 | Time | Poem 간 | 시 Liver | Poem Liver (2022-2023) is the continuation of Ryu's use of mistranslation as a way to envision new life in language that is often agents of the empire. 시간 which translates to “time” in English, is then mistranslated sonically where the first character becomes poem and the second character becomes liver. The word for Time in Korean then translates to Poem Liver.
